What this game is

Marathon is BungiePublisherBungieBungie is the developer of Destiny 2 and the original creator of Halo. It self-publishes Destiny across PC and consoles and added BattlEye kernel-mode anti-cheat to the game in 2021, and its 2026 extraction shooter Marathon ships with BattlEye too. Sony Interactive Entertainment acquired Bungie in 2022.2 games in this family →'s sci-fi extraction shooter, released March 5, 2026 on PC through Steam, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. Bungie develops and publishes it as a studio owned by Sony Interactive Entertainment since 2022. Runners drop onto the lost colony of Tau Ceti IV, loot, fight rival crews and AI, and keep what they carry only if they extract, the same stakes that define Escape from Tarkov and Call of Duty DMZ. It is reported to run on Bungie's in-house Tiger EngineEngineTiger Engine (Bungie)The Tiger Engine is Bungie's proprietary engine, an evolution of the blam! engine that powered Halo. It powers Destiny and Destiny 2 and is built and maintained entirely in-house, not Unreal or Unity.2 games in this family →, the lineage behind Destiny, and it sells as a premium game at $39.99 for the Standard Edition. In September 2026 Bungie dropped its fixed seasonal schedule and set a permanent PvE mode, Symbiosis, for December 8.

What a thoughtful gamer should know

Marathon is a paid game on PC, sold only through Steam, and BattlEyeAnti-cheatBattlEyeBattlEye is the kernel anti-cheat from BattlEye Innovations GmbH (Reutlingen, Germany), founded 2004. One of the longest-running kernel anti-cheats in PC gaming. The kernel driver (bedaisy.sys) and user-mode service (BEService.exe) are both catalogued in the Field Guide.8 games in this family → comes with it. Steam says BattlEye needs manual removal after you uninstall: if Marathon was your only BattlEye game, run Uninstall_BattlEye.bat from the game's BattlEye folder, if there is one, before uninstalling, or, if the files are already gone, run sc delete BEService from an administrator command prompt, which BattlEye's own FAQ describes. If you still play another BattlEye game, such as Destiny 2, skip that step. Bungie says it will not ban you for running Discord, OBS, or RTSS, though some of their overlay features will not work in the game.

What installing this does to your system
kernel · with gameLoads a kernel-level driver while the game runs, then unloads it when you quit.

On PC, Marathon requires BattlEye, and Steam's store page says so plainly: it uses kernel-level anti-cheat, and BattlEye needs manual removal after you uninstall the game. Bungie's February 2026 security post, as reported, describes a rebuilt stack that pairs BattlEye with proprietary layers, with both user-mode and kernel-mode components; Bungie has not said which piece does what, or when its own components load. Bungie's support pages say the PC client resists outside applications inserting code, which is why some overlays, such as MSI Afterburner's frame counter and OBS Game Capture, are listed as incompatible. Much of the protection runs on Bungie's side: fully authoritative dedicated servers decide movement, shooting, and inventory, and a server-side fog of war withholds what a player should not be able to sense. The published PC requirements list Windows 10 64-bit and DirectX 12 and do not mention Secure Boot or TPM 2.0.

Publisher track record

Before launch, on May 15, 2025, artist Antireal showed that alpha textures reused her 2017 poster designs; Bungie said a former Bungie artist had put them in a texture sheet without the current team's knowledge, and that it would make it right with her. On June 17, 2025 Bungie delayed the September release after mixed alpha feedback. Ahead of launch it promised permanent bans for cheating, with appeals for detection mistakes, and by April 7, 2026, after complaints about cheating in ranked play, it said it was actively banning confirmed cheaters and expanding detection. Vera found no official player count from Bungie.
