It entered early access on January 13, 2026, sold directly from the Hytale store with a $19.99 Starter Edition rather than through Steam. Riot Games bought the studio in 2020, and in June 2025 the game was announced as cancelled; on November 17, 2025, founders Simon Collins-Laflamme and Philippe Touchette announced they had bought it back from Riot and would fund it themselves. It launched with Exploration and Creative modes and modding from day one.
On your own PC, Hytale is one of the lightest trust asks in this guide: no kernel driver and no boot-time service. Spend your caution on servers instead, because a server's plugins decide what your client sees and accepts. If you host one, treat Java plugins the way the studio itself does, as code with safety concerns, and install only plugins whose source you can trace. Because Hytale is sold outside Steam, buy it from the official store and download the launcher from hytale.com, not from a mirror.
Hytale asks very little of your PC at the kernel level, and its own license says so: the EULA states that its anti-cheat and integrity measures are primarily server-side, with limited client-side telemetry, and that the studio does not deploy kernel-level anti-cheat. The same section says it may collect gameplay, device, and network signals to detect cheating, so the client is not silent, but no driver installs. You install and update it through Hypixel's own launcher, and GamingOnLinux reported a native Linux build distributed as a Flatpak at launch. Modding is host-based by design: the studio does not intend to support client mods, and players join modded servers without downloading mods themselves. That puts Hytale in the server-side tier, the same shape as Minecraft Java Edition.
Hypixel's record here is mostly about openness, not incidents. In November 2025 its technical director wrote that Java server plugins come with safety concerns and that the studio wants modding without exposing players to the security risks of some other modding platforms; he committed to releasing the server source code as soon as the studio is legally able to, and noted that the server is not obfuscated in the meantime. The December 2025 FAQ said the game would not launch on Steam initially, citing modding features Steam does not support. Game Developer reported the June 2025 cancellation, quoting Hypixel that even after a major engine reboot the game was not far enough along. No security incident involving the client or launcher was found in named reporting.
