Do Good, or Be Good Doing It

I got my oil changed this weekend and ended up in a long conversation with a man in the waiting room. A stranger. We talked the way you sometimes get to talk with someone you will probably never see again, which is to say honestly. I showed him something I was proud of, and he received it like a friend would.

As I was leaving, he said something to me, and I have been carrying it since:

"Do good.. or be good doing it."

Listen to how that is built, because it is finer than it sounds. It is not a repetition. It is two roads.

The first road is the act. Go do the good thing. Build it, fix it, show up for it, ship it. That is the road we celebrate, the one that gets measured and photographed and remembered.

The second road is the manner. Whatever you happen to be doing, an oil change, a Tuesday, a hard year, be good while you are doing it. Be decent to the person in the next chair. Tell the truth in the small transaction nobody will ever audit. Leave the room a little better than the version of you that walked in.

And the word between them is the mercy. Or. Because some days you do not get to choose what you are able to do. The body will not cooperate, or the week already took everything, or the work you dreamed of doing is out of reach for reasons that were never up to you. The man who gave me this line knows more about that than I do, and he was not reciting philosophy. He was describing his practice. On the days the first road is closed, the second one is always open, and it counts in full.

I am writing this on a tired Monday, which is exactly the kind of day the line was built for. Today is not going to be a do-good day for me. Nothing is getting built that anyone will photograph. So it is a be-good-doing-it day: show up, be decent in the ordinary stuff, come home. That is not the consolation prize. That is the other road, and it goes to the same place.

It is also, I realized later, why we build the way we do. Vera has never asked a player to go prove themselves. It just lets them be provable while doing the thing they already love. The act or the manner, the same door.

So that is the whole dispatch. If you are having the kind of day where doing good feels out of reach, take the second road. Be good doing whatever the day actually is. A stranger in a waiting room taught me that it counts, and he would know.
